Lower Eyelid Surgery: Reduce Bags and Dark Circles Under the Eyes

Do you suffer from dark circles or bags under your eyes that make you appear tired? The Eye Physicians of Long Beach perform cosmetic procedures to reduce the appearance of under eyelid bags and dark circles. It is important to have a complete evaluation with our oculoplastic surgeons to determine what procedure is best for your particular situation.

Fillers may be used to increase the fullness and decrease the appearance of dark circles and under eye hollows. For under eye bags, a cosmetic procedure called blepharoplasty may be necessary to restore bright, alert-looking eyes.

Lower Eyelid Surgery Before and After

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) in Long Beach

Cosmetic eyelid surgery can be performed on the lower lids, and is often referred to as lower eyelid blepharoplasty. Lower eyelid surgery can help reduce:

  • Sagging eyelids
  • Wrinkles surrounding the eyes
  • Fatty deposits on the eyelids
  • Under-eye bags

During the procedure, an incision can be made either internally (transconjunctival) or externally through the skin. The decision regarding which approach is best for you will be identified by your oculoplastic surgeon, and is based on  the amount of skin that needs be removed from the lower eyelid. The internal approach leaves no external incision line while the external incision is placed just below the eyelid margin to hide any scarring.

Depending on the severity of the condition, lower eyelid blepharoplasty may take up to three hours to complete. After the procedure, common side effects include swelling and bruising, which often occur during the first two weeks following surgery. These commonly fade in the next several weeks.
